10-year-old girl accidentally shot in head and killed: cops

A 10-year-old girl was accidentally shot in the head and killed in Philadelphia Thursday night — the second such incident in the city in less than a week, according to a new report.

The girl was struck around 9:30 p.m. on Whitby Avenue in Kingsessing, a neighborhood in the southwest section of the city, WPVI reported

She was taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she later died.

People who were in the home at the time are being questioned by police, according to the report.

Additional detail on the incident were not released, the outlet reported.

The shooting happened just days after a 10-year-old boy fatally shot himself with a gun he found while home alone with his younger sister in North Philly, police said.

He was discovered around 6 p.m. Saturday with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

The 10-year-old was pronounced dead after the shooting at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

The boy was rushed to St. Christopher’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said in a statement.

“This is the second child in less than a week to die from an accidental gunshot wound,” Deputy Police Commissioner Robin Wimberly said of the latest incident, according to the local report. “We have the right to arms in our home, but we also have to be responsible.”

Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw called the tragedies “completely preventable,”  adding that “it is the responsibility of adults to keep guns out of the hands of our kids.”

“Never leave guns unattended or easily accessible,” Outlaw said. “We must do everything possible to ensure that our children are safe in their homes.”
