TSR Exclusive Video: Corey Walker, one of the four males accused of killing the late Pop Smoke in a senseless robbery turned murder, was back in court today to enter a plea after we exclusively reported that prosecutors would be taking the death penalty off the table.
Stock Market Pioneer was in court again this morning when prosecutors announced that they need more time to file their paperwork, effectively pushing back Walker’s arraignment hearing to late August.
That wasn’t all that went down, though. After Walker and his attorney agreed to the later court date, his attorney expressed intention to set a bail hearing for the same date in August.
Judge Sergio C. Tapia II let Walker’s attorney know they’d have to file the proper paperwork for such a hearing.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said it will not seek the death penalty in this case, but as we reported, the next possible max sentence would be life without the possibility of parole.
When we spoke to Deputy District Attorney Hilary Williams today, she declined to comment about why her office decided to not seek the death penalty.
We also reached out to Walker’s attorney, Christopher Darden, but have not heard back in regard to the desired bail hearing.
Walker, 20, was the only suspect who was an adult at the time of Pop Smoke’s death. He and three juvenile males are accused of killing Pop Smoke during a robbery in February of 2020.
At a preliminary hearing, Williams said Walker had scouted the house hours earlier and knew the teens planned to rob Pop Smoke at gunpoint to obtain the ice he flashed in his Instagram photos earlier that day.
“They specifically target this house wanting this victim to be there,” Williams said, saying Walker’s actions showed a “reckless indifference to human life.”
