Braves' Mike Soroka re-tears Achilles, is out for season

Mike Soroka has completely re-torn his right Achilles, requiring him to undergo season-ending surgery, the Braves announced on Saturday. It will be the third surgery on that tendon since he initially injured it in August 2020.

Per the Braves, Soroka re-injured his Achilles simply walking to the clubhouse on Thursday:

The surgery on Soroka’s Achilles — the date for which has yet to be determined — will be his third in less than a year. The 23-year-old pitcher initially tore the tendon on Aug. 3, 2020 against the Mets. He fell to the ground after his 48th pitch and had to be helped off the field. That injury ended his season, one in which he registered three starts, an 0-1 record and 3.95 ERA in 13 2⁄3 innings.

Soroka intended to rejoin Atlanta’s rotation by late April, though that was inhibited by shoulder inflammation. He suffered a setback in his Achilles recovery in May after experiencing pain while walking. It was discovered his body was rejecting sutures from his initial surgery, necessitating exploratory surgery in mid-May.

Soroka has made only 37 starts dating back to his MLB debut in 2018. He had five starts that 2018 season, before right shoulder ailment discomfort shut him down. Soroka went on to a breakout campaign in 2019, becoming the Braves’ youngest pitcher to be named an All-Star and finishing sixth in balloting for the 2019 National League Cy Young Award.
