Enough is enough! In Mount Laurel, NJ, Black residents have banded together to support a Black man who his white neighbor attacked. In a viral video from Friday, Edward Cagney Mathews was caught harassing his neighbor and telling him to learn the laws because this is not Africa and called the Black man a ‘monkey.’ As the incident proceeded, Edward encouraged folks to come holla at him and gave out his home address. The folks had time and showed up and showed out in front of his home today as they started protesting.
Several protestors were outside of Edward’s home chanting “No justice, no peace,” with their fist raised in the air during the protest.
According to 6 ABC Action News reports, this isn’t his first incident where a Black person called him out for being racist. One of the protestors in attendance, Jazmyn Suszynski, claimed that she and her mother Aliya Robinson were also victimized by Edward previously. “I tried. We have tried to get justice, and if we got justice, this wouldn’t be happening now,” said Aliya. It looks like this time, and justice may be served. In this incident, Edward’s actions are going to receive consequences. He faces harassment and biased intimidation charges. According to neighbors, the charges stem from months of issues with the development’s HOA board. Mt. Laurel police have released a statement saying they don’t tolerate any hate or bias intimidation in any form.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time an incident has happened like this where a community has had to rise and protest against racism. As we previously reported in April, a viral incident was caught where a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jonathan Pentland confronted a Black man named Deandre in Columbia, South Carolina, after walking in a predominately white neighborhood. The outrage caused residents in the community, celebrities, and activists to stand up for Deandre and called out the Pentland family, which resulted in Jonathan losing his job.
