Couple ambushed, shot outside car in middle of Chicago street

A young father was shot dead and his girlfriend critically wounded after being yanked from their car on a crowded Chicago street over the weekend.

Hours after celebrating at the city’s Puerto Rican Day Parade on Saturday, Gyovanny Arzuaga and Yasmin Perez were driving through the Humboldt Park neighborhood when a group of men attacked their car, according to local outlets, including Fox 32.

Disturbing video footage circulating on social-media that apparently captured the 9:15 p.m. assault shows the victims either being pulled or falling out of their car — which was flying a Puerto Rican flag — then blasted at close-range by a single gunman.

Arzuaga, 24, was fatally shot in the head, while Perez, the 25-year-old mother of the couple’s two children, was left in critical condition from a gunshot to the neck, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

While local police would not comment on the authenticity of the video, the Windy City’s CBS affiliate obtained footage captured by a witness that appears to show the same incident from a different angle.

A police spokeswoman told The Sun-Times that the shooting was preceded by a car crash, but no further information was available as to a possible motive, and no suspects had been identified as of Monday.

“My heart is destroyed,” Arzuaga’s brother, who was not identified by name, told Fox 32. “That was my best friend, my brother.”

Arzuaga and Perez were among at least 21 people shot in Chicago overnight Saturday into Sunday, according to local outlet WGN, with Arzuaga one of three victims to die of their wounds.
