Critical Role reveals character art for its Vox Machina animated series

Critical Role has revealed the final character art for The Legend of Vox Machina, an animated series coming to Amazon Prime Video. Leading the design is Phil Bourassa, a veteran of superhero cartoons such as Young Justice, Batman: Bad Blood, and Justice League. The final art — including a short animation — was included in a video on YouTube.

In 2019 the Dungeons & Dragons actual play group Critical Role launched a crowdfunding campaign for an animated series based on their early adventures. After raising more than $11 million, it’s got a two-season deal with Amazon Prime Video. Animation is being handled by Emmy-award winning studio Titmouse, best known for its work on series such as The Venture Bros. and Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures.

The Critical Role troupe — Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, Matthew Mercer, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Tavis Willingham — all reprising their roles from the tabletop game in the new series. They’re also executive producers, alongside Brandon Auman (Star Wars: Resistance) and Chris Prynoski (Metalocalypse). Sung Jin Ahn (Niko and the Sword of Light) is the supervising director. No premiere date has been announced.

Critical Role’s second full campaign arc, featuring a different band of adventurers known as The Mighty Nein, wrapped up earlier this month. On June 24 it will launch a new eight-episode mini-campaign titled Exandria Unlimited, featuring newcomer Aabria Iyengar as the Dungeon Master.
