David Dastmalchian On Working On The Suicide Squad & The Dark Knight

The Suicide Squad star David Dastmalchian revealed his mindset working on different comic book properties like Ant-Man, The Dark Knight and The Flash.

David Dastmalchian is no stranger to the world of comic book adaptations. He was a huge fan of comic books growing up and he has starred in numerous superhero movies like The Dark Knight, Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp and now The Suicide Squad. The actor also appeared in multiple episodes of The CW’s The Flash series as the villainous Abra Kadabra.

If you were wondering how David Dastmalchian handled being in different superhero projects with different tones then we have an answer for you. While we were on set of The Suicide Squad back in 2019, the actor told us exactly how he juggles being in so many different franchises. “It’s weird. It’s so surreal you guys. Like you can imagine somebody who’s been collecting comic books, and obsessed with, or fascinated, I shouldn’t say obsessed with. That’s a weird word. But fascinated by all of this, and really loves it so much,” said Dastmalchian. “You just want to savor every moment, and you want be as grateful as you possibly can, because every time something like this has happened, I’ve said ‘You can’t do more. Like it’s not going to, you can’t go any further in this world of things. So just enjoy it. Because this has been so incredible.’”

The Suicide Squad star went on to describe how different and unique his experiences have been. “None of these journeys have been the same, and yet it’s amazing to me that the Dark Knight so epically, cinematically, revolutionarily lifted the spirit of like the Miller-Loeb kind of world into cinema, whereas what I think that the guys have done with CW and with The Flash, that was so fun. And that totally felt to me like that 83, 85 run of JLA when I was really getting into those DC characters,” the actor continued. “And then you think about Ant Man, and Peyton Reed’s creation of that universe. And I mean, all of those are so true to the world in which they were telling the story. So when I cracked open this script, when I first got to look at this, I knew James was so true to the darker edges of Task Force X, what’s happened with Suicide Squad, what the Suicide Squad is about.”

David Dastmalchian has a ton of faith in his friend and director of The Suicide Squad, James Gunn. So much so, that he states that his approach on Polka-Dot Man will be his toughest yet. “He understands the source material so implicitly, that my approach is this is going to be one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done as an actor,” Dastmalchian went on. “Because there are all of the elements and tones influenced by the comics themselves. And that means the eighties runs as well as the early runs. He’s brought all that into this. It’s really challenging. And I find it through the physicality as well. And the physicality is really well defined by James with this character. So that’s been really helpful for me.”

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
