Dean Maguire’s funeral in Dublin praised Irish thief’s life of crime

An Irish thief’s funeral included multiple nods to his life of crime, leading one priest in attendance to call the proceedings “the most disturbing” he has seen, reports said.

The eulogies for 29-year-old Dean Maguire at his funeral on Friday included one person cursing inside St. Mary’s Priory in Dublin, reports said.

“Sorry for the language, father,” one mourner said, according to The Irish Times. “Rest in peace, you f—king legend.”

Behind the altar was a professionally printed banner that said, “You know the score, get on the floor, don’t be funny, show me the money.”

Mourners, who outwardly broke COVID-19 protocols by busting the church’s occupancy limits and social distancing requirements, made offerings that included a torch, screwdriver and Maguire’s registration plate, the Times said.

One relative noted Maguire was a family guy, protective of his brother Paddy.

“If Paddy had an argument with someone you would say, ‘Paddy show me where they live and I will go up and blow them off the map,’” the mourner said, according to the Times.

Another claimed he could write a book of their memories together, good and bad.

“But I won’t mention them because you can’t get flipped but I can,” the mourner said, according to the Times. “You know the score brother.”

Maguire was a serial burglar with multiple criminal convictions, wanted in the UK for fleeing a prison there in 2018, reports said.

The driver of the truck, who was seriously injured, wasn’t mentioned during the eulogy for Maguire, a priest lamented in media reports.

Priest Donal Roche, who was at the church to enforce COVID-19 protocols, was disgusted by the display.

“It was the most disturbing liturgy I have ever been at,” he told RTE Liveline.

In a separate interview with the Times he called the offerings “terrible” and the eulogies “very strange.”

Mourners had ripped tape off the pews that marked areas restricted by COVID limits, Extra.ie reported.

Police were called but reportedly said their presence might only make things worse unless the unruly crowd began breaking laws, the publication stated. The Archdiocese of Dublin said it wouldn’t be appropriate to comment on a individual ceremony, the Sunday World reported.
