Roommates, just minutes before he was eventually sentenced to 22 ½ years in prison for the May 2020 murder of George Floyd, Derek Chauvin’s mother, Carolyn Pawlenty, spoke directly to the judge and pleaded for leniency in his sentencing. At one point during her written statement, she referred to Derek Chauvin as “innocent,” not a racist and “a good man”—without ever mentioning the death of Floyd.
Addressing Judge Cahill before he read his official sentencing, Carolyn Pawlenty stated the following about her son Derek Chauvin:
“My son’s identity has also been reduced to that of a racist. I want this court to know that none of these things are true and that my son is a good man. [The public] will never know the loving and caring man he is. I have always believed in [Derek’s] innocence and I’ll never waver from that. When you sentence him, you will also be sentencing me. I won’t be able to see him or give him our special hug. When he is released, his father and I most likely won’t be here.”
As we previously reported, former Minneapolis police officer and convicted murderer Derek Chauvin was officially sentenced to 22 ½ years in prison after previously being found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. He will also receive credit for time already served.
He was immediately taken back into police custody and transferred to the Minnesota Correctional Facility.
