The MTA has recorded dozens of people hit by trains through the first five months of the year, department data show.
The NYPD reported 23 “non-criminal” fatalities on city subway tracks from January through May 31 of 2021, compared to 24 during the same period last year, when far fewer people were riding the rails during the pandemic.
There have been 10 alleged suicides over the first five months in 2021 compared to six during the same period in 2020, a 67 percent spike, the MTA data show.
Six people were hit by trains after falling between subway cars in 2021, as compared to four such incidents during the first five months of 2020, the MTA data says.
The 73 total “collisions,” as the authorities term it, between trains and people this year are an 8 percent decrease from the 80 incidents reported during the same period last year. January proved to be the most dangerous month, with 22 incidents reported, including two alleged suicides and two alleged attempted suicides, the MTA stats show.
The MTA reported 13 incidents in February, 18 in March and 10 each in April and May.
