The final and semi-final of Euro 2020 are going to become an even bigger spectacle as the UK government has granted permission to allow 60,000 fans to the Wembley Stadium for these games. This decision from the government will mean that attendance is increased to 75 percent at the iconic stadium.

Both knockout games will see the largest crowds in Britain for a sporting event since March 2020. The ticket holders for the semi-final and finals are supposed to carry a COVID-19 negative report or proof of full vaccination. Europe’s football governing body UEFA is also likely to allow 2500 VIP guests to watch the final on 11th July and UEFA is most likely to approve this decision. Culture and Sport Secretary, Oliver Dowden confirmed that talks were held with UEFA and FA to make sure that the safety of fans is ensured.

“We have worked extremely closely with UEFA and the FA to ensure rigorous and tight public health measures are in place whilst allowing more fans to see the action live. The finals promise to be an unforgettable moment in our national recovery from the pandemic.”

Previously reports suggested that UEFA might shift the venue for the semi-finals and finals from Wembley Stadium, but UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin welcomed the new announcement of increased capacity. Ceferin also revealed that the last 18 months have been taught us how fans are an important part of the game on and off the pitch. He also said that this is a step forward to returning to a normal way of life.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson also said that his government is looking forward to hosting the semi-finals and finals at Wembley safely and securely. Talks were reportedly held regarding The Puskas Arena in Budapest to be the potential alternative if the final was shifted from Wembley Stadium. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi suggested that Rome can also conduct the final as there’s an increase in COVID-19 infections in Britain but the statements by Ceferin and Boris Johnson have put the rumours to bed.
