Fall Out Boy cancels Citi Field show Wednesday due to COVID scare

Fall Out Boy will not play the next two concerts — including one Wednesday, Aug. 4, at Citi Field in Queens — on the Hella Mega tour with Green Day and Weezer after an unspecified crew member tested positive for COVID-19.

“Out of an abundance of caution, Fall Out Boy will not perform at the New York and Boston shows of the Hella Mega Tour due to an individual on the band’s team testing positive for COVID,” the band wrote on Instagram.

The show will go on Wednesday at Citi Field, and Thursday, Aug. 5, at Boston’s Fenway Park with Green Day, Weezer and opening act Interrupters still performing at both events. Fall Out Boy is scheduled to return for their Sunday, Aug. 8, performance at Nationals Park in Washington, DC.

“It’s important to note that everyone on the entire tour, both band and crew, are vaccinated,” the group wrote. “Each band and their crew have operated in a bubble independently to safeguard everyone as much as possible at each show and in between shows.”

The tour also includes a full-time COVID safety protocol officer on staff who makes sure that all tour crew follows CDC guidelines.

Comments on the Instagram post were overall supportive of the band’s decision to cancel. “oh no i hope theyre ok!!” one person commented. “This is so scary, please be safe out there! I hope whoever’s sick recovers quickly,” another chimed in.

In addition to people asking about refunds, others were puzzled as to why the tour was not pushed back even later due to changing CDC guidelines.

“BABES JUST CANCEL THE TOUR OH MY GOD” commented a fan.

“I know it’s not their fault and they’re making the right choice here but this is why I was hoping they’d just postpone again…I will be majorly upset if I don’t get to see all bands after waiting almost 2 years already,” said another.

The Hella Mega tour was announced on Sept. 10, 2019, and it originally featured dates from March to August 2020 before being pushed back to 2021. All three bands were scheduled to perform at 34 shows, with Green Day and Weezer doing an additional six. The postponed Hella Mega tour kicked off July 24 in Dallas.

The setlist features 15 songs from Fall Out Boy, including “Uma Thurman,” “Irresistible,” “Phoenix” and “Centuries.”
