Game recap: Reading managed just four hits in falling to Akron in a Double-A Northeast League game at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Jhailyn Ortiz knocked in the Fightins’ only run with a solo homer in the third, his second with Reading and his 21st overall this season. He joined the Fightin Phils from High-A Jersey Shore last month.
Reading (33-52) has lost three straight.
Akron (52-32) took a 4-0 lead in the second against Josh Hendrickson (3-2). Bryan Lavastida had an RBI single, Jonathan Engelmann a sacrifice fly and Jose Fermin a two-run homer. The home run was Fermin’s first of the season.
The RubberDucks made it 7-1 in the eighth. Bo Naylor had an RBI single and Engelmann a two-run double.
Hendrickson allowed four runs on six hits in five innings. He struck out five.
Akron starter Konnor Pilkington (1-0), making his second Double-A start, allowed one run on two hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out four.
Tanner Tully (two hits in two innings), Thomas Ponticelli (one inning) and Nick Mikolajchak (one inning) completed the four-hitter.
Phillers: Former Reading and Philadelphia catcher Carlos Ruiz was inducted into the Baseballtown Hall of Fame following the game. … Shortstop Bryson Stott went 2-for-4. … Lehigh Valley infielder Daniel Brito and Reading outfielder were named Phillies Minor League Co-Hitters of the Month for July. Jersey Shore left-hander Ethan Lindow was named the organization’s pitcher of the month, and Lehigh Valley infielder Arquimedes Gamboa was named defender of the month. … Brito was promoted from Reading to Triple-A on July 22. He hit .298 with four doubles, three triples, six home runs, 17 RBIs, 13 walks and a .985 OPS in 25 games over the two levels. He had two surgeries earlier this month after suffering from what the Phillies termed a “medical emergency” during a game in Rochester. … Ortiz, promoted to Reading on July 31, hit .277 with three doubles, 13 home runs, 25 RBIs, 10 walks and a 1.088 OPS in 27 games. … Lindow, who also has spent time with Reading this season, went 3-1 with a 1.55 ERA in 29 innings over five games (four starts) for Jersey Shore. … Gamboa spent the entire month with Reading, where he played 217.1 innings of errorless baseball, converting all 84 of his total chances. He appeared in 10 games at shortstop, eight in center field, six at third base and two at second base. He was promoted to Triple-A on Aug. 6.
