‘Game of Thrones’ Author Says Books Won’t End Like HBO Series

Now all he has to do is release the book…

Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin has revealed that his books will have a different ending than the HBO series.

HBO‘s Game of Thrones ended in 2019 with a… less than stellar reception. Despite earlier seasons being hailed as the greatest episodes of television ever produced, the series’ final two seasons fumbled thanks to the showrunners not having George R. R. Martin’s books to lean on. Martin is famous for being behind schedule, having still not released The Winds of Winter. Martin had a five-book headstart on the series but failed to release The Winds of Winter in time, forcing the showrunners to create their own path, with slight help from Martin.

Speaking with wttwchicgao, The Game of Thrones writer discussed how he wished he had stayed ahead of the books, but also how his books will end differently than the HBO series.

“Looking back, I wish I’d stayed ahead of the books. My biggest issue there was when they began the [TV] series, I had four books already in print and the fifth one came out just as the series was starting in 2011… I had a five-book head-start and these are gigantic books as you know; I never thought they would catch up with me but they did… They caught up with me and passed me and you know, that made it a little strange because now the show was ahead of me and the show was going in somewhat different directions so I’m still working on the book but you’ll see my ending when that comes out.”

George R. R. Martin is currently working on a Game of Thrones spin-off for HBO. Here is the synopsis for House of the Dragon:

Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the series will tell the story of House Targaryen (a.k.a. the House that gave us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen) and take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik will serve as the showrunner with Martin and Ryan Condal. House of the Dragon stars Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, and Paddy Considine.
