Marvel’s Kevin Feige On Sam Raimi Directing ‘Doctor Strange 2’

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige opened up about working with Sam Raimi on Doctor Strange 2.

Sam Raimi is practically superhero royalty at this point for thanks to his stint as the director of the three Spider-Man films in the 2000s. Widely regarded as the best trilogy in all of superhero fandom, the Spider-Man trilogy is perhaps the most influential for modern superhero films. Raimi pivoted away from comic book films after Spider-Man 3, but he’s set to return to the Marvel universe in next year’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, a character that Raimi has always been fond of.

In a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Marvel Cinematic Universe architect Kevin Feige opened up about working with Sam Raimi before he helmed the first Iron Man.

“Everything we do at Marvel Studios is from the point of view of the audience, and how do we make the audience feel one way, or how do we evoke an emotion out of an audience? I really feel like I learned that from watching Sam on the Spider-Man movies. I was just very lucky to be there working for the former head of Marvel Studios, Avi Arad, and just watching. Watching Avi, watching Laura Ziskin, the producer of that, watching Amy Pascal, who ran the studio at the time, and particularly Sam Raimi put those movies together.”

Kevin Feige then discussed how it’s full circle for Sam Raimi to helm Doctor Strange, a character the Spider-Man director has always admired. Feige also touched upon how Doctor Strange 2 will have Rami’s stamp on it.

“So now, being in a position that Sam is back in the Marvel universe and working for us on Doctor Strange, which aside from Spider-Man — both Steve Ditko co-creations — was his favorite character, is really quite remarkable and full circle for me personally from my journey at Marvel. But really, it’s just exciting to get to watch Sam work again and to see Sam Raimi put his Sam Raimi stamp on Doctor Strange, on the Multiverse, on Marvel.”
