A young Georgia mother who was in a bathtub with her young son took drugs and fell asleep, causing the infant to drown, authorities said.
Anslie Nicole Brantley, 19, was arrested Friday on charges of second-degree murder and cruelty to children in her son’s June 9 death at a home in Coweta County, sheriff officials said Monday.
Deputies say they responded to the residence and found an unresponsive child who later died at a hospital. Investigators later learned that Brantley “had taken drugs” and fell asleep in the bathtub, killing her son in the process.
“The baby was in the bathtub with her and was unresponsive when she woke up,” the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The 10-month-old boy, whose name has not been released, was discovered cold to the touch by investigators, the Newnan Times-Herald reported.
Authorities also found methamphetamine in the home owned by Brantley’s mother, Kelli Gordon, 36, who was arrested on narcotics possession charges. She remained in a county jail on charges unrelated to her grandson’s death, the newspaper reported.
Five of Gordon’s other children were placed in the custody of child welfare officials following her arrest, authorities said.
Toxicology results for both Brantley and her son were pending Monday, the Times-Herald reported.
Brantley was taken into custody without incident in Alamo, Georgia, some 160 miles away from Coweta County. She remains held without bond, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. It’s unclear if she’s hired an attorney who could speak on her behalf.
A Facebook profile for Brantley, of Newnan, identifies her as a “mommy to Draiden.” She updated her account in October with a photo of a baby boy.
“Nana’s sweet boy,” one reply read.
