NASCAR lineup at Road America: Starting order, pole for Sunday's race with qualifying

NASCAR conducted qualifying for just the sixth time this season on Sunday when drivers drove around the 4.048-mile course at Road America to set the starting lineup for the Jockey Made in America 250 presented by KwikTrip (2:30 p.m. ET; NBC, TSN1,4,5, MRN).

On-track qualifying is a rarity this season as NASCAR tries to limit the amount of time teams spend at the track amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Only eight races total are scheduled to have practice and qualifying in 2021; Road America was race No. 6, joining Daytona (for the Daytona 500), Bristol’s dirt track, Circuit of the Americas, Charlotte (for the Coca-Cola 600) and Nashville.

The remaining sessions will be for a new track on the schedule (Indianapolis’ road course) and the season-ending Championship 4 race at Phoenix. Road America is a “new” track as well: NASCAR’s Cup Series has not raced at the course since 1956, but the Xfinity Series has been racing there since 2010.

Below is the starting lineup, which was set with qualifying, for Sunday’s Jockey Made in America 250 presented by KwikTrip at Road America..

Who won the pole for the NASCAR race at Road America?

WIlliam Byron was the fastest of the 12 drivers who competed for the pole in the second round of qualifying. He turned in a lap time of 2 minutes, 12.049 seconds (110.359 mph).

Byron’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson will join him on the front row of the starting grid after qualifying second.

Their teammate Chase Elliott failed to advance to the second round. He did not record a lap time during the first round because cautions on the course slowed him down enough that he reached the start/finish line after Round 1 ended. He will start 34th.

Kyle Busch will drop to the rear of the field for the green flag. He crashed in practice, which forced his team to go to a backup car. Busch won the Xfinity race at Road America on Saturday.
