Netflix’s Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf anime trailer jumps back in time

The life of a Witcher is hard work, but there’s still plenty of time for leisure activities, at least according to Vesemir in the trailer for Netflix’s new animated movie, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. Along with the trailer, Netflix has also revealed the voice cast for Studio Mir’s upcoming anime.

Nightmare of the Wolf will follow the adventures of young Vesemir, and take place several years before his adventures with Geralt that fans are familiar with. Despite the difference in time, the monster hunters’ place in the world doesn’t seem too different. Most people hate and fear them, but Vesemir’s only concern in the world is monster hunting and the coin he gets paid for doing it — the Witcher way.

While this trailer shows us quite a few of Vesemir’s early battles, we know from Netflix’s description of the movie (and its title) to expect one particularly harrowing conflict with a werewolf at the center of the film. Along with that battle, we’ll also probably get plenty of backstory on Geralt’s mentor — and some of his contemporaries — before we see him again, much older and grayer, in The Witcher season 2.

Vesemir will be voiced in Nightmare of the Wolf by Theo James from Castlevania, and who played Young Vesemir in The Witcher’s first season. The show will also feature Lara Pulver (Sherlock) as Tetra, Graham McTavish (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) as Deglan, and Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica) voicing Lady Zerbst.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is set to debut on Aug. 28, 2021. But that isn’t the only Witcher series that Netflix has on the horizon. The Witcher season 2 will premiere on Dec. 17, while The Witcher: Blood Origin, a live-action prequel series, is expected on the streaming service sometime in 2022 or 2023.
