New ‘Suicide Squad’ Trailer Leaks Online Early

The latest trailer for director James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” is here, after seemingly leaking online early.

An unlisted YouTube video with the new trailer circulated online with the title “The Suicide Squad – Early Access Trailer Do Not Share.” Intentional or not, Gunn tweeted that some of the cast members released the trailer online earlier than expected.

Warner Bros.’ Brazilian and Canadian Twitter accounts even joined in on the fun.

A Warner Bros. representative told Variety that the trailer “will start running in ads on YouTube starting at 5:00am PT [Tuesday] morning. This will be the only way to see the trailer until the trailer debuts widely via James Gunn later in the day.”

The movie sees the squad being recruited by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) on a mission to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory. Along the way, they run into some massive obstacles — including Starro, the telepathic, skyscraper-tall starfish.

While Gunn has stated that his take on the task force of DC supervillains will be unique, it won’t completely dismantle the foundation David Ayer built in 2016’s “Suicide Squad.” Several stars from the first film will return, including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Davis as Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag.

Newcomers to the team will include John Cena as Peacemaker, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Alice Braga as Sul Soria, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Mayling Ng as Mongal, Michael Rooker as Savant, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, Sean Gunn as Weasel and Flula Borg as Javelin. “Suicide Squad” creator John Ostrander will also appear as Dr. Fitzgibbon, while “Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Watiti has also been cast in an undisclosed role.

Gunn previously directed Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy” and its 2017 sequel before being temporarily fired from the final installment in the trilogy. During this time, Warner Bros offered the filmmaker an opportunity to play with some of the most obscure villains from DC Comics’ extensive lineup of characters. Gunn signed on for this film and a “Peacemaker” series for HBO Max before re-negotiating with Disney to return for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” which will be released on May 23, 2023.

“The Suicide Squad” will open on Aug. 6 in theaters and on HBO Max for 30 days.
