Padres vs. Nationals prediction: Expect lots of runs

Former All-Star pitchers Blake Snell and Patrick Corbin were not on the roster for this year’s Midsummer Classic, and both will try to rediscover their top form when they start the second half of the season on Saturday in Washington.

Snell’s first season with the San Diego Padres has had its ups and downs. When pitching in San Diego, he has looked like his former Cy Young Award-winning self, with a 1.43 ERA, three home runs allowed in 37 ²/₃ innings and opponents hitting .167 off of him.

On the road, Snell has been completely different. He has a 9.09 ERA, is averaging less than four innings per start and opponents are hitting .313 off of him while drawing 7.8 walks per nine innings.

He will face off against Corbin, who is giving up 1.7 home runs and three walks per nine innings while posting a 5.40 ERA and has allowed at least three runs in 11 of his 16 starts this season.

Among National League teams, the Nationals have the best batting average, while the Padres are fifth in road batting average. The Padres also are second in the National League in home runs per game on the road, so both pitchers will be picking up where they left off before the All Star Break: struggling.

The play: Padres vs. Nationals, Total Over 9 runs.
