In Pixar’s latest feature, the anxiety of a domineering mom and the general pressures of life take an appropriately magical turn. One minute Mei Lee is a regular 13-year-old girl trying to pass math class, and the next, she’s a giant red panda striding over the streets of Canada.
Turning Red marks the feature directorial debut of Domee Shi, who picked up the 2018 animated short film Oscar for Bao, another story of child-parent strife. Newcomer Rosalie Chiang voices Mei, while Sandra Oh costars as “Mei Lee’s protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming, who is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager.”
Pixar’s new film was first unveiled at the 2020 Disney Investors Call, alongside new titles like Lightyear, the “real” story of the “real” Buzz Lightyear, as well as episodic projects for Disney Plus based on Up and the Cars films.
Unlike the studio’s previous two films, Soul and Luca, Turning Red will be headed straight to theaters. The adventure of the teen animorph is set for March 11, 2022.
