Scarlett Johansson On Original Black Widow Costume For ‘Winter Soldier’

Black Widow actor Scarlett Johansson has revealed the original costume Marvel had planned for the character in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Scarlett Johansson finally got her own run at headlining a Marvel movie with this weekend’s Black Widow. With the character’s journey finally wrapped up, Johansson has spent a lot of time during the press run looking back on the character. A frequent topic that has come up is the overt-sexualization of Black Widow in the early stages of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, primarily in Iron Man 2. The trend would have continued in Captain America: The Winter Soldier but Johansson stopped the buck there.

In a recent interview with Fatherly, Scarlett Johansson star discussed the original costume that was proposed for the character in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

“In some says I look at it as a costume she was wearing — at the time, Marvel was interested in the character being a shape-shifter. When we were doing Captain America: The Winter Soldier — this is a really funny thing — the look is fantastic and utilitarian. She first drives up in this beautiful car and picks up Cap, and initially in the script, it was like, she arrives in her tennis whites, with a blonde wig. It was very quickly killed.”

“You work with a lot of male writers. Things were shifting. You have to be a part of the change. Audiences are also demanding stuff and there’s a cultural shift and it feeds everything into a more progressive direction. It’s been a process, it’s been a process.”

What are your thoughts on the original costume plan for Black Widow in The Winter Soldier?
