Shennecossett set to host two-day Connecticut Senior Open

Jul. 12—GROTON — The Connecticut Senior Open will return to Shennecossett Golf Couse for the 24th consecutive year on Monday and Tuesday.

Bloomfield’s Jim Becker is the defending champion (he has won the event three times) in a full field that includes 81 professionals and 75 amateurs from 11 different states in the 36-hole, medal-play event. The winning professional will receive $4,000.

Norwich’s Dave Jones, who plays out of Mohegan Sun Country Club, also returns after winning low amateur honors in 2020 and finishing eighth overall. Jones was also low amateur in 2012 and 2015, the same years Becker won his other two titles.

“It is a unique opportunity for us to host an important event year after year,” Shennecossett head professional Todd Goodhue said. “It is not often that a facility will have a chance to be associated with an event that welcomes in players from many different states. It is a lot of fun for our staff and our membership loves volunteering for the event and being part of it.”

Other returning champions are Robin Byrd (2019), Norwich Free Academy graduate John Elliott (2017), Eric Egloff (2016), Jerry Courville (2014, 2009), Kevin Foster (2013, 2004), Dave Szewczul (2010), and Jack McConachie (2001).
