The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran reveals that the first Task Force X film won’t be addressed.
2016’s Suicide Squad was a critical failure but made enough money at the box office to put a sequel in development. The sequel went through many drafts and looked like it would be stuck in development hell until James Gunn and producer Peter Safran came aboard. The producer and director wanted to give the franchise a clean slate and will walk around the proverbial elephant in the room with the sequel.
“We don’t address it,” said Safran. “Yes, they’re the characters, the actors, that played them in the first movie. But we really wanted to make sure that this stands on its own two feet. So again, it’s why you can’t really call it… It’s not a sequel, but there are some characters that were in the first movie, right? So it’s not really a full reboot either. So we just call it James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.”
The Suicide Squad takes place sometime after the first film and Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. There’s obviously some connective tissue, but Safran revealed that the sequel won’t connect to Birds of Prey either. When asked if The Suicide Squad would connect to Birds of Prey, the producer added,”Not really. No. It’s very much a standalone film.”
