The USA men’s basketball team’s road to the Tokyo Olympics started off with a big speed bump.
Team USA lost to Nigeria in its first exhibition game on Saturday night in Las Vegas — yes, that actually happened. Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard and Co. were favored by nearly 30 points heading into the matchup, but the Nigerians pulled off a 90-87 upset.
“In a way, I’m kind of glad it happened,” Team USA Coach Gregg Popovich said after the game. “That means nothing if we don’t learn from it. It could be the most important thing in this tournament for us.”
How will Team USA respond when it takes the floor against Australia on Monday night? Was the stunning loss just a blip on the radar or a troubling sign of things to come?
