Derek Carr’s Davante Adams dream could be shattered by Packers

On Tuesday, Davante Adams appeared unsure of his future. The Packers appear determined to give him some clarity.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Thursday that Adams and the Packers were inching closer to a deal that would pay him like one of the elite receivers in the NFL.

“Davante Adams and the Packers are expected to try to come to an agreement on a massive contract extension. He will likely be the highest-paid receiver in the league at some point,” Fowler said on ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” per Bleacher Report. “Most evaluators I talk to believe he is the very best at that position right now. So, he’s a priority for the Packers, whether Aaron Rodgers is the quarterback or Jordan Love.”

Adams, 28, was Rodgers’ top target last season. He finished the year with 115 receptions for 1,374 yards and led the league with 18 receiving touchdowns. His numbers could have been even gaudier if he did not miss two games with a hamstring injury.

The news of the extension will upset a number of teams that believed Adams would be a free agent after this season. Specifically, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who was teammates with Adams at Fresno State and has made it clear he’d like to reunite with his former playmaker.

“I would always welcome [playing] with him again. I think it would unlock some things in both of us that people haven’t seen yet. And I’m always open to that and I will be recruiting very hard. So when that time comes, it will be a full-court press,” Carr told ABC30 in Fresno about Adams’ potential free agency.

With a contract extension on the horizon, Carr’s dreams seem to be shattered.

“Well, I mean, I’m a Packer, so I can’t really get too far ahead on that,” Adams said, per the Bay Area News Group. “When the season ends and if nothing’s figured out, then maybe we’ll have something to talk about. But those are cautious waters, so I can’t really dabble in that now.”

Last week, Adams told Bleacher Report the plan for him was to “not go anywhere.” Now, that plan seems close to reality.

The question remains who will be throwing him the football, as there is still no indication that Rodgers plans to return to the Packers.
