James Gunn Considered Using Deathstroke In Film

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn considered adding Deathstroke and other villains to the film.

James Gunn signed on to write and direct The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films sometime after Disney temporarily removed him from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. When he first considered writing The Suicide Squad, he kept a file folder of certain DC Comics characters he’d use for the film.

The current roster he has includes some holdovers from David Ayer’s film including Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), but it is also filled with some lesser-known characters such as Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Peacemaker (John Cena).

On his official Twitter, James Gunn revealed some of the characters he considered adding to the film, one of which is none other than Deathstroke. Gunn mentioned that he also considered using Black Manta, Livewire, Punch and Jewelee, Man-Bat, Chemo, Knockout, Gunhawk, KGBeast, Mr. Freeze, Killer Frost, Black Spider, Solomon Grundy and Rainbow Creature.

Hearing that Deathstroke was considered for his script is an intriguing proposition. After all, the DC Extended Universe already has a Deathstroke in Joe Manganiello, whom made his debut in a post-credits scene for Justice League and was set to be the villain in Ben Affleck’s scrapped The Batman script. Gareth Evans was also developing a standalone Deathstroke movie which has since been shelved.

It’s hard not to imagine how different Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke could be if brought into The Suicide Squad, especially under the vision of a filmmaker like James Gunn. Perhaps this could come into fruition someday, and who knows? Maybe Joe Manganiello would be up for the chance to bring Deathstroke to life from James Gunn’s vision.

Here is the synopsis for the upcoming film:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.

The Suicide Squad is currently scheduled to hit theaters and HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
