‘Shang-Chi’ Writer Confident That The Film Will Change The MCU

The film presents a massive opportunity.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer David Callaham is confident about the film’s impact on the MCU.

The highly-anticipated superhero Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be the first MCU entry with an Asian lead, with Kim’s Convenience actor Simu Liu bringing the Master of Kung Fu to life for the first time on the big screen. Marvel Studios already dropped two trailers for the new film, showcasing some of the exciting Kung Fu on display, much of which Simu Liu performs himself.

In an interview with CBR, writer David Callaham discussed how the film will not only bring on a new level of hand-to-hand fight sequences, but will also bring a much bigger impact to the MCU and beyond:

“On a larger scale, I think what I’d love to say is that it’s an incredibly important movie. I myself am Chinese American, and so the opportunity to be a part of the first movie to put Asian American leads in front of a superhero movie of that scale, I think, is going to be really meaningful and important, not only for Asian fans, but for everybody, just for the sake of visibility and representation.

So I couldn’t be happier that it’s happening. I think it’s a challenging time right now. So it’s worked out in a way that I think will really, hopefully, change the way that people look at these types of movies and what can be on our screens in the future.”

The film is a great opportunity to promote Asian representation within the MCU, especially given how the franchise had fallen short in the past. There was much controversy regarding the casting of Tilda Swinton as a reimagined version of The Ancient One in Doctor Strange, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently revealed that he regretted the decision.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Ronny Chieng and Dallas Liu. Here’s the official synopsis for the Marvel Studios project:

“Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. Shang-Chi must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.”

The film is scheduled to hit theaters on September 3, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming Marvel project and be sure to subscribe to Stock Market Pioneer’s YouTube channel for more exclusive video content.
