Supernatural prequel series in the works from star Jensen Ackles

Supernatural ended its 15-season run last November with a whole big turbo-hell love confession. Well, it actually ended with Dean Winchester dying because of a flesh wound, but there was a big turbo-super-hell confession before that. Anyway, good news for all the still diehard Supernatural fans who weren’t satisfied — a prequel series is in the works!

Unfortunately, it doesn’t really focus on the Winchester brothers. Instead, the series, executive produced by Supernatural star Jensen Ackles and his wife Danneel Ackles, will focus on Dean and Sam’s parents. The show will focus on the “epic, untold love story” between John and Mary Winchester. In the main series, Mary was killed by a demon when Sam was just a baby and her death spurred John to become a hunter. Mary was played by Samantha Smith as an adult and Amy Gumenick as a young woman, while John was played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan as an adult and Matt Cohen as a young adult.

The series hasn’t been officially greenlit by The CW yet and just has a script commitment. It will be written by former co-executive producer of Supernatural Robbie Thompson. This won’t be the first time a Supernatural spinoff has been attempted; the CW previously tried to make Bloodlines, which focused on the monster world in Chicago, and Wayward Sisters, which followed a group of young women united by supernatural tragedy. Neither panned out. Here’s hoping third time’s a charm!
