‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’ Will Be ‘Cannon’

James Gunn has confirmed that the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be canon and essential viewing before the third film.

One of the most inspired ideas coming out of Marvel Studios is the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, a clear homage to the holiday specials of Doctor Who and Star Wars. Set before Vol. 3, the Holiday Special is expected to give fans further insight into the Guardians after the events of Avengers: Endgame, which saw a new 2014 Gamora joining the team. The Guardians of the Galaxy are also set to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder, which releases a whole year before the space opera threequel.

In a recent chat with Collider, James Gunn discussed how fans will have to watch The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special before they watch Vol. 3, deeming it as cannon.

“It’s in-canon, it’s about the Guardians, you’re gonna learn stuff that you need to learn before Volume 3, and it’s great I’m really happy with it.”

The forty-minute Holiday Special is set to hit Disney Plus in 2022, a whole year before the third film in the franchise. Despite the year-long wait, James Gunn has confirmed that both projects will be filmed back-to-back this November in Georgia.

“I’m gonna film it at the same time as the movie. I’m using a lot of the same sets, the same actors obviously, so we’re filming simultaneously with the film but it’s gonna have to be edited and finished sooner.”
