More than 125 children and adults have contracted COVID-19 at a Texas church’s youth group camp last weekend, according to the church.
The outbreak stemmed from Clear Creek Community Church’s camp, attended by more than 400 kids in sixth to 12th grade.
Bruce Wesley, the lead pastor of the interdenominational church with five campuses in the Houston area, said “hundreds” of others were likely exposed by campers when they returned home.
“Unfortunately, upon return from camp, 125+ campers and adults reported to us that they tested positive for COVID-19,” he said in a statement. “Additionally, hundreds more were exposed to COVID-19 at camp. And hundreds of others were likely exposed when infected people returned home from camp.”
Clear Creek Community Church was forced to cancel church services until Sunday as a result of the outbreak.
“From the beginning of the pandemic, we have sought to love our neighbors by practicing strict safety protocols,” Wesley continued. “We are surprised and saddened by this turn of events. Our hearts break for those infected with the virus. Please pray for a speedy and complete recovery for all of those affected.”
According to the Galveston County Health District, members of the group did not leave the campgrounds during their stay, and no outside campers were on site.
“The health district is working closely with church leadership to investigate the outbreak, trace potential contacts and offer guidance and resources,” the county health district said in a statement.
“This is a reminder that COVID-19 is still here and we have to take precautions,” said Dr. Philip Keiser of the Galveston County Local Health Authority said in the Health District’s statement. “If you’re old enough to get vaccinated and haven’t, now is the time. These vaccines are safe and offer the best protection against COVID-19 to you, your family and your community.”
Health officials recommended that any camper who is symptomatic should be tested and remain quarantined while awaiting results.
